The universe provides about 1,000 places where spirits can manifest in form. Manifesting in form creates distance from Spirit, and thus functions as a weight-training program for developing the spirit. Earth is one of the most difficult places - only two others are more difficult - meaning that the nature of earth form creates more distance from Spirit, it is more animalistic. Most spirits manifesting on earth were created here for earth, with special qualities such as resilience. Spirits may come to earth from other origins, but they must be vetted first to ensure they are up to the challenge. Earth manifestation is very effective and thus valued.
The process of both entering earth and of re-entering Spirit is gated. To enter, spirits must complete a planning process and chose a Life Purpose subject to approval; it must aim to create growth for the self or another. Spirits receive counseling about their Life Purpose choices and where (for example, in which families and situations) to manifest, although they are free to chose independently of the counseling. Pre-arrangements can be made with others who will also enter and help to accomplish the Life Purpose. Pre-arrangements can be made with Helping Spirits to create specific circumstances, such as an illness, accidental death, or opportunity. To re-enter Spirit, the body must be dead, and the spirit must experience a Life Review before continuing.
As spirits, we know in advance that earth will subject us to unfair suffering, that there are limits to the help we can receive, and that we may be stuck and unable to return to Spirit. Manifesting on earth requires courage. Natural processes (the elements and animals) combined with the free will choices of humans creates a random environment that is not controlled by Helping Spirits.
All spirits entering earth are assigned Helping Spirits to accompany them during the lifetime and this help is essential for success. However, help is provided within specific parameters:
Help must be asked for.
Help must not contravene the free will of others.
Help for the purpose of harming others is not available.
Help may not save spirits from the consequences of knowingly doing wrong.
Help must conform to the laws of nature.
Manifesting in form is effective at producing growth, but it is also effective at producing negative patterns and even damage from challenging lifetimes. However, there is a safety net. After a challenging lifetime, there are opportunities for healing and growth in Spirit, if spirits chose them, and most do. Full healing is in manifestation, so additional lifetimes planned as healing experiences are more effective. (Thus, it’s best to process all negative experiences before leaving earth; even deathbed processing is valuable.) There is also the ultimate healing of Remediation, which is spending unlimited time directly in Source energy until all distress and damage is overwritten, as if it did not happen. Adults choose this option sparingly because it cancels out the growth they accomplished during the lifetime. Remediation is a first choice of complete healing for children.
As spirits we have free will at all times and may chose our own paths both on earth and in Spirit. The process of spiritual growth toward greater truth, love, wisdom and power is entirely Do-It-Yourself. We may choose every step of our journey: whether or not to pursue growth through manifestation or in Spirit; what we believe should be worked on; and if we are satisfied with the results of our choices and our work.
Psychopomp is the work of tending to people whose bodies have died, but whose spirits have not crossed into Spirit; they are stuck here in earth. Psychopomp is a traditional practice in shamanic cultures; in these cultures it was rightly recognized that not all people make a successful passage home. This passage of leaving earth through death, like the passage of entering earth through birth, was intended to be attended and monitored by the community. Since the eclipse of shamanic traditions by Christianity and other religions, the required practice of attending to the spirit after the death of the body has been abandoned. Earth now holds a growing backlog of uncrossed people who need to be assisted to cross. I call this work, “Escorting”.
Although the illnesses, accidents, and violence that cause death of the body may be filled with suffering, death itself is actually a non-event and easily overlooked. Thus, when the death of the body approaches, Spirit sends a beautiful Welcome energy which continues for a few days after the death. The Welcome is meant to alert people to the change, help them understand what to do, and inspire them to come home. The Welcome appears in a form meaningful to each person; Christians might see Jesus or angels, other people might see a phenomenon of nature, loved ones, or light. People need their awareness free to notice the welcome, and appropriate beliefs and information to understand its meaning. They must be ready to leave earth, and, finally, able to act for themselves. If these four required aspects are not functioning - Awareness, Understanding, Readiness, Ability - the crossing may not happen.
These requirements correspond to the four aspects of personhood: Body, Mind, Emotions, and Spirit.
Awareness (Body)- In many death situations, especially in earlier centuries with minimal medical care, death may be accompanied by unrelieved suffering. People suffering from the symptoms of illness, from the pain of injuries, or in the midst of life-threatening emergencies that they are working hard to resolve, may be so fully occupied by these physical experiences that they have no awareness free to notice anything outside the situation, including the Welcome. They are still in the physical situation, involved in the experiences of the body.
Understanding (Mind) - People must understand that the Welcome is from Spirit and its purpose is to call them home because it is now time to leave. This also requires understanding that death is a possibility or has already happened, else the Welcome, if it is perceived, may be seen as something “nice” but not relevant, perhaps as a product of dreaming, delirium, or a medical treatment. People must also be free from puzzling about the situation, or from misleading information that causes them to misinterpret what is happening.
Readiness (Emotions) - People must be ready to leave the life they have been invested in, to let go of it and all they hold dear, and go with the Welcome. Emotions about the situation can prevent letting go.
Ability (Spirit) - Suffering beyond one’s resources can cause spiritual damage, rendering a person the equivalent of being spiritually unconscious. People must also be free enough from spiritual damage that they are still functional and can act for themselves.
After the Welcome is withdrawn, the person who has not been able to follow it may be stuck in the location where the body has died. Once the body has died, the spirit no longer experiences time, and no further input from the senses is available to shift awareness away from whatever preoccupation was present in the death situation. However, people can still cross on their own if they are aware the body has died, if they believe it is possible to cross to Spirit on their own, and if they intend to do it. We know before we come to earth that it is possible to get stuck, and that Spirit does not rescue people, although it is possible to pre-arrange with another being to be checked on. As a rule, we must cross ourselves, be helped by another human such as a shamanic practitioner, or stay in earth until earth is unmade.
The backlog of uncrossed which has accumulated since the end of shamanic traditions is now large, and like the concept of stuck Qi in Chinese medicine, the energies of each death remain with each uncrossed person. The living can be negatively affected by this energy. Tending the uncrossed restores freedom to unembodied people and clears the negative energies of death, allowing both people and earth to heal, move forward, and transform. The number of uncrossed is continuing to increase.
The uncrossed need our intervention to restore them to awareness, to provide them with information about the situation and their options, and to address whatever emotional or energetic needs are present. I have worked with three levels of intervention, based on the level of suffering that people have experienced in the death situation:
Level 1, Mild Cases - the largest group - these people can be assisted by the Rainbow Bridge practice discussed next. The appearance of the Bridge in their environment is enough to restore them to awareness and provides the information they need to go up the Bridge themselves.
Level 2, Medium Cases - these people need individual escorting, including energy restoration, counseling, information, and being shown to the Rainbow Bridge to go up themselves.
Level 3, Extreme Cases - these people are unable to be aware and help themselves due to spiritual damage caused by traumatic suffering. They need escorting with more extensive energy restoration, counseling, information, being taken up the Rainbow Bridge by a practitioner, and will likely enter Remediation.
